Frequently asked questions about work permits

Are you in doubt about the rules or your work permit options?

Here you will find answers to the most common questions.

What are the requirements for obtaining a work permit?

The requirements vary by scheme, but typically include salary level, employment conditions and documentation of qualifications and education. It is crucial that the employment meets Danish standards.

How long does it take to get a work permit?

The case processing time varies depending on the scheme and case type, but can typically take from a few weeks to several months.

Can my employer apply for me?

Yes. However, many companies do not have a legal function or time to handle the application. We assist both you and the employer in those schemes where the application is two-part.

What happens if I change jobs?

A work permit is linked to a specific position, and therefore you lose it if the work ceases. If you change jobs, a new application must therefore be submitted in a timely manner.

Can my work permit be extended?

Yes, if the conditions are still met, the work permit can be extended. The application must be submitted before the current permit expires.

What do the authorities typically ask?

It depends on the scheme you are applying under, but the application typically includes information about your identity, education, work experience and the specific job offer, including salary and employment conditions. In addition, you will usually need to provide information about, among other things, previous stays in Denmark, family circumstances, finances, housing, health and any criminal records.

Can my family get a residence permit with me?

Ja, hvis du får arbejdstilladelse, kan din ægtefælle (registreret partner eller fast samlever) og hjemmeboende børn under 18 år få opholdstilladelse.
